Tackling diabetes with a bold new dietary approach: Neal Barnard at TEDxFremont

www.tedxfremont.com Currently 100 million Americans are pre-diabetic or diabetic, and one in three kids born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes. Neal Barnard, clinical researcher and founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), identifies the causes of this serious issue and advises us how we can fight these statistics.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. If specialists can’t agree on a diet for “most” people what chance do we have. I’ve watched so many contradictory suggestions from so many “specialists” it’s depressing.

  2. To fight stage 4 lung cancer I made 39 diet and lifestyle changes to help my 4 treatments. No sugar best change. Given 3 months to live in feb 2017. Today happily tumourfreetim

  3. I began eating keto May 6, 2018 and then on August 1, 2018, I started the ultimate elimination diet: carnivore. My autoimmune symptoms diminish with each month. I feel great.

  4. Would this help with type 1 diabetes? I'm 45 and have had it since I was 3. I am not against working on being more of a vegetarian I know it will be difficult. I have done fasting and it has worked even though I cave and break the diet. Which upsets me.
Thank for any help or info you can provide.

  5. Thanks for the healthy message, especially that causation of diabetes may be related to cellular oil blocking insulin that allows sugar in to fuel the cell.  I eat vegan and I'm on message.  I do have an observation though; that, many of the leading nutritionists (Campbell, Esselstyn, Barnard, . . ) all came from dairy or ranching backgrounds—and they presumably have always been skinny as rails.  Of course, they have eaten plant based for a long time now.  I may attribute some of their success to hard working (active) farm upbringings.  I live in (farm & ranch) Oklahoma and the farmers I've worked for may be in their eighties but they are usually lean, quite active and you may see them climbing ladders, roofing their houses, operating power equipment, driving hundreds of miles and very active in family life. Some sedentary elderly may be over weight (possibly diet related) but some may have pretty good health, possibly related to being active in younger years.

  6. Half truths and outright lies from an ideological vegan. He wants you to not eat meat, even though meat is HEALTHY. Read the Obesity Code by Jason Fung and Eat Rich Live Long by Ivor Cummins for the unbiased truth.

  7. There's so much wrong with what Neal Barnard says, I don't even know where to start. He states that diabetes is now an epidemic, later in the video he states that meat consumption has been falling. There seems to be a correlation with increased diabetes and low meat consumption… along with increased fruit consumption and high levels of processed foods. No common sense.
And why the cat's teeth are different than human's teeth? It's because humans don't fight with their face, they don't hunt with her face. We have big brains and big brains are at the top of the food chain. Lol

  8. I'm T2 10 years down the road ,they don't tell you that you loose 40% of your immune system I'm 70 now
I watch every thing for sugar content ,at 5/10 175 lbs is ideal or me and I stay around there I got an electric bike for exorcise because I had 2spine ops and ant run ,eat banana s they said for the potassium what they did not say was DONT EAT RIPE ONES the sugar has fermented by then eat green ones = less sugar ,take vitamins ,if you get infected feet / ingrown toenail nails or athletes foot bath them in a solution of Hydrogen peroxide I use 6% ,average numbers on the
    Gluco = mornings around 7/8 evenings = appx 9 , I still got all of my fingers & toes . / UK

  9. I was a type 2 diabetic for nearly 18 years. The diabetes was getting so bad on medications that I was told that I needed to start injecting insulin. I started a whole food plant based lifestyle about 14 months ago and I no longer have the symptoms of diabetes and without medications.

Thank you for this wonderful information Dr. Neal Barnard!

  10. Such a great message, everyone should watch this talk once year by law until diet related illness is no longer a problem, and be paid to do it by their employer. I wish my Grandparents could/would watch this and let it resonate, they would prevent so much suffering for themselves and from my parents/myself caring for them. And I wish their doctors didn't tell them diabetes was incurable. Even if they didn't eat 100% perfect, just nixing a few of the unhealthy things and replacing them with nutritious would be great.

  11. When he talks of evolution and how we developed eating meat he is of no interest to me. If he believes in "evolution" why would we evolve to eating meat. If bad wouldn't that be devolving. Don't go crazy on meat. Eat greens. Watch the carbs. Omega 3 fats equal to Omega 6.

  12. He is well meaning but terribly mistaken. He is looking through the binoculars from the wrong end. He wants you to eliminate fats and instead eat carbs. Fats are healthy and they are what we evolved to eat for energy. Man made fats and oils like Corn oil and soybean oil are terrible but Olive oil is OK but one of the best and healthiest fats is LARD. Look into intermittent fasting and the Ketogenic diet. This guys diet killed my mom.

  13. This guy is an American hero in my book. Dropped 3 points off my A1C in my first 3 months of plant-based eating and exercise. Gives me a lot of hope when I was really dejected about my T2 diagnosis.

  14. he’s basically saying If you can’t process carbohydrate well eat but ton of them and then you’ll be able to process them better it’s like saying to a person that is allergic to peanuts if you eat 20 pounds of them will no longer be allergic to them he’s Completely insane

  15. Great advice. I managed to keep diabetes at bay for more than 10 years with exercise and mostly vegetables. Do not get me wrong – I like eating meat and butter and cheese, but limit this. Also love the presentation and the humor. Thank you doctor.

  16. It has been demonstrated that ketogenic diets also cure diabetes (btw, diabetes type 1 is the genetic kind, type 2 is what you get from overeating carbs. Type 2 is also the kind that can be cured. (The hereditary type 1 can't)

This was a bit of a tendentious talk, activistic

  17. This Neal Barnard is a quack. Actually worse, as he doesn't disclose his agenda. He is substantially funded by PETA. (Starting in fiscal year 1994, donations and grants to PCRM reportedly totaled more than a million dollars). He has decided against all meat and now makes up statements to try to support that point. He uses statistics the way a drunk uses a lamp post: for support, not for illumination.

  18. You lost me with ‘we’re exporting this epidemic overseas….’. I realize Mexico, for instance isn’t overseas, but their diabetes (and alcoholism) rates are ‘through the roof’. Mothers down there regularly feed their kids coke and candy bars for breakfast, the adults live on carbs and pure sugar. We don’t export it, they bring it in.
