**I FORGOT TO MENTION, THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE WHILE TRAINING AT BOLSHOI IS THE SLANTED FLOORS!! EQUALS INTO TRAINING IN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ALIGNMENT AND PLACEMENT MAKING IT EVEN HARDER WHEN GOING BACK TO NORMAL FLOORING

Many of you have asked me for information on the training at Bolshoi and how it is different to North American or other European training. Here i include some of my knowledge of Vaganova training from reading as well as my experience training with russians.
There is an ample amount of information out there that you can find online or in books and i highly recommend you find out yourself! As theres only so much information i can provide in a youtube video without making it too long or boring.

**Also most of this footage was filmed over a year ago, therefore none of this is current

  2. I'm not really sure what you are comparing it too, in what style did you train before? It sounds like Balanchine, if you are surprised about heels down, quality over quantity, importance of the arms… I teach Cecchetti, and it has all of those things in it's training as well.
    Nonetheless, very interesting. I did not know Bolshoi was this pure in the Vaganova technique, I always thought it had more of the old Russian (pré-Vaganova) style. But I just didn't know a lot about it.
    And one last thing : Vaganova is taught in almost every amateur balletschool in my country (the Netherlands), so the thing about it being very precise, and injuries are rare… Only where the selection is strict, and only perfect ballet bodies are in the class. I've seen a lot of poor Vaganova classes around…

  3. Thanks for the really informative video, from a fellow vegan 😀 i love watching ballet videos and in a few weeks time I am going to see the ballet for the first time ever! (Sleeping beauty) I live in the Netherlands and am going to see ballet in Amsterdam. I've been trying to find out what style of ballet they do in the Netherlands, does anybody know? I am guessing RAD, the ballerinas on the website look more athletic than French or Russian ballerinas.

  4. Thank you for such an informative video! It was exactly what I've been looking for for ages. I'm RAD trained. From my observations, the use of the head in Russian technique is very different too -and far more beautiful! If you wish to post any tips on use of the head I'd be delighted!

  5. True that Vaganova is an amazing method and develops a very strong body and gracefuless. However, many people seem to forget that Russian ballet evolved thanks to Bounonville and Cecchetti who went to Russia. Things like the importance of the arms and developing exercises for each day of the week were developed by Cecchetti and the Russians took them. It's true they perfecte Ballet. They got a rich heritage though!!!

  6. I enjoyed your video. I have taught ballet for years. The Mariinsky and the Bolshoi have very different styles. The women in the Mariinsky have the long beautiful arms and the epaulment of the pure Vaganova style. The Bolshoi women (with the exception of some dancers who trained at the Vaganova in St. Petersburg) do not have this quality. In contrast, the male dancers of the Bolshoi are stronger (IMO) than Mariinsky. I love both companies, but the Mariinsky is a slight favorite. I saw them a few months ago dancing excerpts from Fokine. Heaven!!

I really appreciate how much time you spent into explaining these details to us, gave great context at the beginning of various styles, and detailed descriptions of combinations, loved seeing class excerpts. Is it a very competitive vibe? Do you see your own improvement? Your balance is pretty nuts. How in the h*ll are they all so beautifully hitting those ecartés, is it the lower back strength like Danica said? I have a lot of homework to do

  8. I like these comments: 5th vertabrae (5S, right?) 'as if'' tightened and pulled up while torso is steady: Aplomb and attention to epaulement.The illustrations were fun to try (moving alignment from one to the other). Thanks.

  9. Very accurate and informative. To really understand the theatrical knowledge of classical russian dance you have to study with teachers that come from this tradition. Russian classical dance involves more than just "technique" as thought in the west. The art of ballet in Russia is more than perfect ecartes, this is just the basis. From this another thechniques are taught, refered to musicality, expresivity and interpretation. All of this comes from the great musical and theatrical art tradition of Russia. Very good video. Excuse the gramatical and ortografic mistakes, english is not my first lenguage.

  10. You've studied much. Should still keep In mind,rigorously point your feet, from all lines, extensively. . Another aggripina method – to turn out from the hips, not just at the knees. You're a beautiful dedicated dancer thank you.

  11. I really appreciate this video. I’ve been turnout to the opposite, I came to the states and I’m trying to keep up with my practice to not lose all the “magic” (if you know what I mean). But, I was trained in the Russian technique and I feel like I have two big feet while attempting Balanchine. It seems like it’s quickier but (please people don’t kill me) sloppier. I’m having great difficulty at class and feeling like quitting. It’s shocking to me to see that dancers just go for it, almost 0 corrections in class and when it come to center exercises they’re not defined and some conectond are missing which all the other dancers end up doing something weird while I can’t understand what’s happening due the huge differences between vaganova snd Balanchine. If you have any tips please leave it in desperate.

  12. 2:49, that's not true, in her book and also in the documentary "Agrippina Vaganova, Great and Terrible", it is said that she DID NOT BELIEVE IN RIGID PROGRAMS, that the sensibility of a teacher is very important.

  13. When you mentioned “slight breaking of the wrists” do you mean that instead of the hand following the same line of the arm, you bend it more at the end? I am going into the vaganova method and this video has truly helped xx all the information I need in one video and perfectly laid out so thank you❤️
